How Starch Affects Horses' Performance
A new study published in theJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicineshows that low-starch diets may improve gastric health and reduce pain behaviours in sport horses with Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS), a condition affecting 17-58% of these horses. Nine show jumpers initially fed a high-starch diet underwent ridden pain scoring, revealing that eight horses had gastric ulcers. After switching to a low-starch diet for 12 weeks, the horses showed significant ulcer reduction, with two fully healed.
